8 Worship Songs About The Glory Of God (Weight & Splendor)
The Hebrew word for glory is “kabod,” which literally means weight or heaviness. When we sing about the glory of God, we aren’t just singing about a bright light; we are singing about the weighty, undeniable significance of who He is. Psalm 19:1 tells us, “The heavens declare the glory of God,” and as His people, we are called to do the same.
Songs about God’s glory shift the center of gravity in a room. They take the focus off our light and momentary troubles and place it on the eternal weight of glory. These anthems help the church visualize the splendor of the King and respond with the only appropriate reaction: awe.
Why These Songs Cultivate Wonder
We selected these songs because:
- They are transcendent. They focus on the “otherness” of God—His majesty, holiness, and radiance.
- They are biblical. They draw imagery from the throne room scenes of Isaiah, Ezekiel, and Revelation.
- They are prioritizing. They remind us that the ultimate goal of our lives and the universe is His glory, not our comfort.
8 Songs To Declare His Splendor
- Holy Forever – “Your name is the highest, Your name is the greatest.” This song has quickly become a standard for glory-focused worship. It connects the church on earth with the “thousand generations” and the angels who exist to give God glory forever.
- Revelation Song – This song is a visual journey into the glory of God. Describing the “clothed in rainbows” and “flashes of lightning,” it helps the congregation mentally step into the throne room and behold the weight of His presence.
- Worthy Of It All – “For from You are all things, and to You are all things.” This simple chorus is the essence of giving God glory. It acknowledges that He is the source and the destination of everything, and therefore deserves all the honor.
- Great Are You Lord – “All the earth will shout Your praise.” The bridge of this song is a prophetic declaration that the whole earth is filled with His glory. It invites even the darkness to tremble at the weight of who He is.
- How Great Thou Art – This classic hymn connects the glory of God revealed in creation (“stars,” “thunder”) with the glory of God revealed in redemption (“on the cross”). It concludes with a personal response of total adoration.
- His Glory And My Good – Often we pit our happiness against God’s glory, but this song reconciles them. It teaches the profound theological truth that God is working all things for His glory, which ultimately results in our good.
- Agnus Dei – “Holy, Holy, are You Lord God Almighty.” Sometimes the glory of God renders us speechless, and all we can do is repeat the song of heaven. This anthem allows the church to linger in that holy space.
- What A Beautiful Name – “You didn’t want heaven without us, so Jesus You brought heaven down.” This song focuses on the glory of Jesus—the Word made flesh—who revealed the Father’s splendor to us.
Example Glory-Focused Setlists
Setlist 1 (The Weight of Glory)
- Holy Forever – Establishes the eternal timeline of God’s glory.
- Revelation Song – Paints the picture of the One we are worshipping.
- Worthy Of It All – Responds with total surrender of “glory, honor, and power.”
Setlist 2 (Glory in Creation and Cross)
- How Great Thou Art – Looks at God’s power in the universe.
- Great Are You Lord – Returns that breath to Him in praise.
- What A Beautiful Name – Focuses on the glory of His name.
How To Use These Songs In Your Church
- Encourage posture. The glory of God naturally leads to bowing. Before singing Agnus Dei, invite people to kneel or sit in a posture of receiving and reverence.
- Use light. If you have stage lighting, use it to support the lyrics. Bright, gold, or white lights during Revelation Song can help visually represent the “flashes of lightning” mentioned in the text.
- Teach the theology. Before His Glory And My Good, take 30 seconds to explain that God is not an ego-maniac for seeking His glory; He is the only Being worthy of it, and our joy is found in it.
