8 Worship Songs For The Body of Christ (Unity)

Christian unity isn’t just about getting along; it’s about agreeing on who God is. When we sing together, we are rehearsing our shared identity. As Psalm 133 says, “How good and pleasant it is when God’s people live together in unity!”

These songs are chosen to build that sense of “us.” They shift the perspective from “my worship” to “our worship,” reminding us that we are part of a global, multi-generational family that spans from the saints of old to the church of today.

Why These Songs Bind Us Together

We selected these songs because:

  • They are collective. They use plural language (“We,” “Our,” “Us”) rather than singular.
  • They are creedal. They focus on the core beliefs that unite all believers, regardless of denomination.
  • They are intergenerational. They connect the current church with the “cloud of witnesses” who have gone before.

8 Songs To Sing As One

  1. This Is Our God – “This is our God, this is who He is.” Phil Wickham’s anthem is a definition of corporate faith. It lists the attributes of God and the history of the church (“Faithful through generations”), anchoring the congregation in a shared story.
  2. Holy Forever – “Your people sing, Holy.” This song expands the room. It reminds us that we aren’t just singing with the people in the pews next to us, but with the “angels and saints” of eternity. It creates a massive sense of unity with the church triumphant.
  3. Great Are You Lord – “It’s Your breath in our lungs.” This is perhaps the ultimate unity song. It unifies the church around the most basic fact of life: we all breathe the same air, given by the same Creator. The chorus is a collective roar of gratitude.
  4. Build My Life – “We will build our lives upon Your love.” (Often sung as “I,” but powerful as “We”). This song establishes a common foundation. Unity is impossible if we are building on different things; this song commits the whole house to the same cornerstone.
  5. King Of Kings – “Praise the Father, Praise the Son, Praise the Spirit.” Doctrine unites. This hymn-like song walks through the Gospel narrative, giving the church a clear, theological banner to rally under.
  6. A Thousand Hallelujahs – “Who else would rock the room… just to sing with the saints.” This song by Brooke Ligertwood captures the joy of the gathering. It celebrates the simple power of Jesus’ name being lifted up by a crowd of believers.
  7. The Blessing – “May His favor be upon you… and your family.” Unity extends to the home. This song allows the church to bless one another, singing God’s promises over the families and children represented in the room.
  8. Cornerstone – “Christ alone, Cornerstone.” Every structure needs a single alignment point. This song declares that despite our differences, we all align with the same Capstone, Jesus Christ.

How To Use These Songs In Your Church

  • Change the pronouns. When singing Build My Life, instruct the church to change “I” to “We” for the final chorus. “We will build OUR lives…” It sends a powerful message of solidarity.
  • Face each other. During The Blessing, ask the congregation to turn and face the aisles or the people behind them. Singing “May His favor be upon YOU” is much more powerful when you are looking someone in the eye.
  • A Capella chorus. Stop the music for the chorus of Great Are You Lord. Hearing hundreds of voices singing the same melody without a band is the sonic definition of unity.

Next Steps

A divided house cannot stand, but a united church is unstoppable. This Sunday, use This Is Our God to remind your people that what they have in common is far greater than what separates them.
