6 Worship Songs For Graduation Sunday (Sending The Next Generation)
Graduation Sunday is a milestone moment in the life of a church. It is a time to celebrate the accomplishments of students, but more importantly, it is a time to commission them. Whether they are heading to college, the workforce, or the mission field, they are stepping into a new season where their faith will be tested and grown.
The best songs for this occasion are those that anchor identity and purpose. We want to send our graduates out with a song in their hearts that reminds them that God has a plan, that He is with them, and that building their life on Jesus is the only investment that lasts forever.
Why These Songs Equip Graduates
We selected these songs because:
- They are foundational. They focus on building a life on the Rock rather than the shifting sands of culture.
- They are prophetic. They declare God’s good intentions for their future, combatting fear of the unknown.
- They are blessings. They function as a sung prayer over the next generation.
6 Songs To Commission The Next Generation
- Good Plans – This is the anthem for Graduation Sunday. Based on Jeremiah 29:11, it explicitly declares that God has “good plans” for us. It gives graduates a joyful confidence that their future is held in safe hands.
- The Blessing – There is no better way to end a service honoring graduates than to sing this scripture over them. “May His presence go before you, and behind you, and beside you.” It is the ultimate prayer of protection and favor.
- Build My Life – “I will build my life upon Your love.” This song is a dedication. It invites the graduate to make a conscious decision about what foundation they will lay for their adult life.
- Firm Foundation (He Won’t) – Transitions are stormy. This song reminds students that while the wind and rain will come, they will not collapse if they are built on Christ. It is a song of resilience for the years ahead.
- Lead On Good Shepherd – Leaving home means following a new voice. This song commits to following the Shepherd “step by step, day by day.” It is perfect for those who feel unsure about where exactly they are going next.
- Trust In God – “I seek You for my answer.” In a world of information overload, this song encourages graduates to seek God’s wisdom above all else. It anchors their trust in His character rather than their own plans.
Example Graduation Setlists
Setlist 1 (The Future Is Bright)
- Good Plans – Opens with excitement and hope.
- Trust In God – A declaration of reliance on Him.
- The Blessing – Sung over the students as they stand at the front.
Setlist 2 (Firm Foundation)
- Firm Foundation (He Won’t) – Establishes the theme of building a life on Jesus.
- Lead On Good Shepherd – A prayer for guidance in the new season.
- Build My Life – A moment of personal dedication.
How To Use These Songs In Your Church
- Invite them on stage. If you have graduates who serve on the worship team, have them lead these songs. It is a visual representation of them “owning” their faith before they leave.
- Create a prayer tunnel. During The Blessing, ask the elders or parents to lay hands on the graduates. Let the visual of the church surrounding them match the lyrics of God surrounding them.
- Give a gift. Print the lyrics of Build My Life or Good Plans on a card and give it to the graduates as a reminder of the truth they sang over themselves.
Next Steps
Graduation is a sending moment. This year, don’t just show a slideshow of baby photos. Use Good Plans to prophetically declare that the best days for your students are not in their past, but in their future with God.
